Steam in Staffordshire
Welcome
Wonderful thing Father's Day! When my son asked me what I would like to mark the occasion I decided to make a sponsored visit to the Churnet Valley Railway (near Leek in Staffordshire) to sample their Railway Photography Day.

My very first Photoshoot - Tuesday 28th June 2005 - was blessed with Kodachrome weather.

The pictures in the Gallery are a tribute to the Stationmaster and his staff who succeeded in making this a day to remember.

The Churnet Valley Railway is not as well known as some of the other Preserved Lines. It deserves to be better known.

Originally part of the BR route between Uttoxeter and Macclesfield, what remains is a 10 mile stretch between Cheddleton and Kingsley and Froghall stations.

As you might expect from rural Staffordshire, the line runs through heavily wooded countryside following the path of the River Churnet which can be seen from most of the route.

The Registered Office is at Cheddleton Station which is on the eastern side of the A520 four or five miles south of Leek. The station is a Grade II listed building and there is a sizeable car park nearby and also a riverside picnic area.

There is a large car park at Kingsley and Froghall which is just off the main A52 road. The North Staffordshire style station building contains an award winning traditional tea room.

This Fotopic Site is a record of the images obtained on the Churnet Valley Railway Photography Day.

All the pictures on the organised shoot were taken with a Minolta Dimage A200 Digital Camera processed with Photoshop.

The Churnet Valley saw the re-launching of the Super D in the following year.

My primary school was situated within cinder throwing distance of the Whelley avoiding line which ran between Springs Branch and Standish Junction on the West Coast Main Line. Springs Branch's quota of Super D's were in daily use on this branch and I simply had to make a pilgrimage to the CVR to see this locomotive at work.

The pictures I took, on 16th July 2005, have been added to this site and if Mr. Waterman and his colleagues ever visit this site - Many thanks!
